Barbra Bannon is a 1986 graduate of Bloomsburg State College where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education with a concentration in Education for the Hearing Impaired. She went on to receive her Master’s Degree in Special Education from Trenton State College. She continues her education in Deaf Studies through Drexel University at Burlington. Barbie is a member of Council for Exceptional Children, National Association for the Deaf, and American Sign Language Teachers Association.
Barbie has been employed with the Bristol Borough School District for 22 years. She implements signing in her teaching of Learning Disabled and Autistic students and collaborates with Regular Education Teachers to cooperatively bring sign language into the Regular Classroom. She enjoys coaching teachers in the use of fingerspelling and signing to increase student spelling, sight-word recognition and comprehension. She has directed several renditions of "A Show of Hands", musical student-signed performances during her tenure with the district. She is often invited to sign at local celebrations and events in her community.
Falling in love with sign language at the age of 8, Barbie was inspired by the life and triumphs of Helen Keller and her teacher Anne Sullivan. After meeting Bob Randall in continuing education classes, Barbie began presenting Sign Language and d/Deaf awareness workshops in several existing classes. Bob Randall, intrigued by the language and hopeful to educate teachers, invited Barbie to instruct a class that introduced this beautiful language and culture to school staff who have had little or no exposure to either. She continues to celebrate the memory of her friend and mentor, Bob Randall, as she delights in the success of her signing students.
Barbie is happily married and lives in Burlington, NJ with her husband John and their two loyal Brittanys, Stella & Maggie. |
